Protect the home—and the people inside it

Mortgage protection built around your family

Your home may be your family’s largest financial commitment. Life insurance can help create funds that loved ones may use to pay the mortgage and preserve stability if an income earner dies.

What mortgage protection means

Mortgage protection is generally a life insurance strategy—not one special type of policy. The death benefit may give beneficiaries funds they can use toward the mortgage, household expenses, other debts, or whatever they need most.

02

Term life for a temporary obligation

A term policy can be aligned with the approximate length of a mortgage and may provide a larger initial death benefit for a comparatively lower premium. Coverage ends when the term expires unless renewed or converted under the contract.

03

Permanent coverage for broader goals

Whole life or indexed universal life may be considered when protection is intended to extend beyond the mortgage. Permanent policies generally cost more and should be evaluated for guarantees, charges, flexibility, and long-term funding requirements.

04

Coverage should consider more than the loan

Paying off a mortgage does not replace income. A needs analysis may also include utilities, property taxes, childcare, education goals, other debts, final expenses, existing savings, and current insurance.

05

Ownership and beneficiaries matter

With individually owned life insurance, the policyowner selects beneficiaries. Unlike coverage that pays a lender directly, beneficiaries generally decide how to use the proceeds according to the family’s priorities.

Important information

Mortgage protection described here is life insurance, not private mortgage insurance (PMI) and not mortgage-payment insurance for unemployment. Death-benefit proceeds are paid according to the policy contract. Coverage is subject to underwriting, exclusions, policy terms, and state availability.
